Robert P. Dolbeare

     Robert ‘Bob’ Dolbeare, the retired president of the Wakefield Item Company and retired publisher of theWakefield Daily Item, has long been known for his support of Wakefield High School athletics.  Through his family newspaper and commercial printing business, Bob has encouraged and fostered interest in Wakefield High sports and Wakefield athletes.

     Mr. Dolbeare wrote in a 1973 editorial, “…the character building attributed to school sports programs comes partially from youngsters being motivated and stimulated to put forth their best effort, to meeting the demands and making the sacrifices necessary to succeed on the playing field and in life.”

     Mr. Dolbeare was a former corporator of the Savings Bank in Wakefield, director of the YMCA, the Wakefield Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor a Rotarian can attain.   He was once president of the former 9:29ers club and a former secretary of the Massachusetts Newspaper Publishers Association.

     Bob is a 1948 graduate of Wakefield High School where he competed in hockey and baseball.  A graduate of Dean College and a Korean- war era veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was an avid runner through much of his life, competing in the Boston Marathon a number of times and participated in the Jimmy Fund Marathon Walk from Hopkington to Boston.

     Mr. Dolbeare is a two-time president of the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield and a two-time president of the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce.
