Wakefield Hall of Fame

Patrick Gannon

Patrick, a class of 1986 WHS graduate, began a twenty-five year association with the basketball program when he volunteered to become the student-manager and junior varsity scorekeeper in 1983.  His excellence in “keeping the book” promoted him quickly and a year later, as he put it, he “made the varsity”.

Patrick’s loyalty to the boys’ basketball team was unmatched.  In fact, during the winter of 1997, while waiting for a double-lung transplant, it became necessary for Patrick to be hospitalized for several days at a time.  It was not uncommon for his father and brother to pick him up at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, drive him to the Wakefield game to do the scorebook and then drive him back to the hospital to continue treatment.

In 1998, Patrick was inducted in the Wakefield High School Athletic Hall of Fame as a contributor, in recognition of his unwavering support of the basketball team and his extraordinary volunteerism.

Patrick was a model for all of us about how to look at life.  For him, the glass was always half-full, not half-empty.  Patrick never complained about the things he couldn’t do, he just tried to do the things he could do to the best of his ability.  Over the last 25 years the one constant about Wakefield basketball was Patrick’s friendly smile, engaging personality and expertise at “keeping the book”.
