John L. Moore

Baseball was John Moore’s forte.  He was a member of the varsity team as a sophomore, the 1946 squad coached by Jim ‘Hack’ Walsh that posted a 13-2 record and went to the semi-finals of the EMass baseball tournament at Fenway Park.  John was also on the varsity in his junior and senior seasons, serving as co-captain in 1948.

John played many positions during his Wakefield High School baseball career, seeing duty on the mound, at shortstop and in the outfield.  He chalked up a perfect 7-0 record on the 9-2 team as a senior where he recorded 76 strikeouts while only allowing 16 walks.

Earning a scholarship to Boston University, he started for the Terriers’ baseball team and after graduation was an outstanding player in the Maine-New Brunswick League playing for the Presque Isle Indians.  He led the team and league with a .353 average with nine homeruns and six triples.

Mr. Moore later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 14 months overseas during the Korean Conflict as an infantryman,

James Moore is well known for his service as vice president of both the Wakefield Trust Company and the Wakefield Savings Bank.  He was also an original member of two local baseball teams, the Wakefield Merchants in the Intercity League and the Over the Hill Gang, later playing in the Men’s Senior Baseball League in Biddeford-Sacco, Maine, capping a remarkable career that spanned 50 years.
