Renee Najarian
As a Wakefield Varsity softball player,
Renee Najarian broke the Middlesex League win record
with 53 wins, complied an ERA of .86 and was a 4 year Middlesex League
All-Star. In 1982,
Renee was heavily recruited for college
basketball but turned down numerous offers to accept a scholarship from the University of South Carolina who was a national
power in women’s
basketball in the early 1980’s. In
the 1984-85 season she was selected Freshman All-American by the Women’s
Basketball News. In spite of this
success, and for various reasons, Renee decided to transfer her sophomore year
to the University of Connecticut which was
not among that era’s top contenders in women’s basketball. Unfortunately she had to abide by NCAA rules
for transfers and did not begin to play until the 1986 season. She quickly made an impact averaging 17.1
points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Over
the two years she was at U Conn she earned All Big
East 1st Team 1986-87 and 1987-88, Kodak All-District 1 Team 1986-87
and voted Outstanding Senior Athlete at
Ms. Najarian is
presently Assistant Athletic Director and Physical Education/Health Teacher at
the
Rene Najarian’s University of Connecticut
